What Snow Tells You About Your Insulation

January 12, 2022

It's snow-man building time in St. Louis!  As you head out this morning with your sleds, take a moment to snap a photo of your snow-covered roof.  How fast and where the snow melts on your roof can tell you a lot about your home's insulation.  Without proper air sealing and attic insulation, you are paying to heat your house AND your roof, thus the melting snow.

This is a well insulated attic, and you can tell because the snow is evenly covering the attic although it has begun to melt on the ground.

If you see spots on the roof that are bare, you are losing heat in the attic in those spots and paying your gas bill just to melt snow.

Fast Melting Snow

If any of your neighbors upgraded their insulation, you will see that they have snow on their roof while it may have melted on yours.  Save your energy (and wallet) by getting a free insulation consultation.

Melting Unevenly

If you notice the snow has melted in one area, that's a good sign that the area has little or no insulation.  It's likely the insulation quality may be different between the main home and an addition or a garage due to different contractors and budgets responsible for the building or renovation of these projects.

Icicles hanging from the roof

Icicles are often caused by a warm attic that melts the snow layer from underneath. The water flows down the roof and freezes at the edge where it is cold. Enough ice will eventually form into ice dams which can cause damage to the roof and water damage in the attic.
