Types of Home Insulation | Koala Insulation of Michiana | Mishawaka

Dependable home insulation keeps you comfortable, reduces energy costs, and prevents wear on your HVAC equipment. That's why choosing the right type is so important. You should pick a material based on factors like the area being insulated and your budget. Here are a few options to keep in mind.

What Type of Insulation Should I Use in My Home?

1. Blanket Batts & Rolls

When it comes to affordability, you can't beat batts and rolls. Often made from fiberglass, this insulation is known for easy installation in areas like crawl spaces and unfinished floors. While effective, most batts and rolls have a lower R-value than other available options. R-value refers to a material's ability to resist heat transfer, and standard fiberglass ranges from 2.9 to 3.8 per inch of thickness. With R-value, higher numbers are always better.

2. Spray Foam

R-values are much higher for spray foam, which uses a special formula to expand into cracks and crevices as it's applied. Closed-cell foam, which features extremely dense cells filled with gas, offers an R-value of 7. Open-celled foam is less dense and filled with air, so its R-value is slightly lower at 3.8. Both selections are ideal for insulating attic spaces, as they offer resistance to water intrusion as well as a solid air barrier.

3. Foam Board

With R-values ranging from 4 to 6.5, foam board is another effective selection. Boards can be used for many applications, including the insulation of foundation and basement walls. They're also ideal for exterior walls, as they prevent heat from leaching through construction materials like wood and wall studs. Despite its utility, foam board is often reserved for new construction, as the installation is often complex for existing structures.

4. Cellulose

If you're concerned about environmental impact, cellulose is the most eco-friendly choice. It's made from 70-85% recycled paper, with the rest being fire retardant. You also won't have to worry about pests and mold because cellulose is treated with boric acid to repel insects. This tightly packed material is blown-in, meaning it's one of the easiest options to install in older homes, but it can be used in newer construction as well. As for the R-value, it can range from 3.2 to 3.8.
